It all begins with family.

The Dirt Biz is a family-owned and operated landscape company based out of Sandy, Oregon. At our core, we’re inspired by the idea that everyone deserves a space to enjoy fresh air and the sun on your face. We also believe your outdoor locale does not have to come at the cost of a second mortgage or your child’s college fund. It just needs to make you smile and bring you closer to who and what matters most.

So, how did The Dirt Biz begin? We’re so glad you asked!

As a child, our founder, Dan (the Dirt Diz) Copeland remembers begrudgingly picking strawberries and tending to his family’s garden. And, what felt like an annoying chore at the time, now brings him back to very fond memories. Instead of vacationing at Disneyland like his friends, Dan learned how to grow food, identify plants and trees, and create inviting spaces with flowers and grasses. His foundational love and respect for the outdoors was instilled in him by his mother, a master gardener and fine artist, and his father, a federal and state conservationist specializing in land, soil, and water management.

As a teenager and young adult, Dan furthered his passion and expertise by spending years working at a nursery, on a landscape crew, and eventually as a foreman planning, operating, and managing teams and equipment.

In early adulthood, Dan pivoted away from landscaping and broke into the snowboard industry. He had a successful two-decade run in action sports, cycling, and outdoor sales. However, after 20 years spent mostly behind a keyboard, Dan decided to get back to his roots and to what truly brings him joy — playing in the dirt.

After the birth of his daughter and endless support from his wonderful wife, Dan made the leap, left corporate America, and started a landscaping business. This move is an on-going reminder to himself, his family, and the world that it’s never too late to recalibrate, put your feet in the dirt, and reconnect with the what you hold most sacred in this world.

We build and restore outdoor spaces for generational togetherness.

Welcome to The Dirt Biz.
